India gangkok Sikkims klooster

Day 1 – Darjeeling – Rinchenpong

Travel time: 4 hours by car

From Darjeeling you drive north into the west of Sikkim. On the way you pass the grass green tea fields for which the entire region of Darjeeling is known. Because Sikkim itself is quite low, the surroundings here are very green and small streams flow between the hills.

After about four hours of driving you will reach the town of Rinchenpong. Here you will spend the night on an authentic farm that is run by a family. This overnight stay includes not only breakfast, but also lunch and dinner. The food is grown by the family themselves and is completely organic. In the afternoon you will have time to take a walk in the area.

Day 2 – Rinchenpong, exploring the area

The next morning you can enjoy breakfast in peace. Today there is absolutely nothing planned so you can see what you feel like and explore the area on your own. The farm is beautifully situated. On the 44 hectares of land, many vegetables, fruits, flowers and trees are grown organically. The friendly family will gladly take you into the land and tell you more about the different plants and what they are used for.

You can also choose one of the organised excursions to various places in the area during your stay at this accommodation, such as a monastery on a mountaintop nearby. Ask the family on site about the possibilities.

Day 3 – Rinchenpong – Pelling

Travel time: 3 hours by car

After breakfast you will say goodbye to the family and continue your journey towards Pelling, where you will reach the Pemayangtse Monastery after lunch. This monastery is hidden between high snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas (almost 2100 meters).

On foot you reach this monastery, which is home to more than a hundred monks and is also a religious school for Buddhist studies. Due to its isolated location, the traditional culture has been well preserved. You will see colorful wall paintings, detailed wood carvings and Buddha statues.

You will spend the night in a hotel in Pelling. In good weather you will have a great view of one of the highest mountains in the world, the Kanchenjunga.

Day 4 – Pelling – Khecheopari lake – Yuksom

Travel time: 1.5 hours by car, 4 hours on foot, 1 hour by car

The day starts with a walk of about 3 km. to the authentic Sanga Choling monastery. At this oldest monastery of Sikkim you have a beautiful view over the green hills and the snow-capped peaks in the distance.

Then you get in the car to the Khecheopari lake. For the people here, the lake, surrounded by prayer flags, is a holy place. Here your walk to the mountain village of Yuksom begins. In small wooden houses the locals try to sell different products and you will find cozy restaurants where you can have a bite to eat. The hotel seems to be a mix of Tibetan and modern architecture. From the terrace garden you have a view of the green surroundings and the white peaks.

Day 5 – Yuksom, end of building block

After breakfast this building block ends in Yuksom. From here you can travel via Tashiding to Gangtok to follow the building block Treasures of Sikkim . You can also travel back to Darjeeling from Yuksom. In that case we can arrange a transfer for you.

To discover the colorful Rajasthan or the exotic south , it is advisable to travel to Delhi or Kolkata and continue your journey from there.
